Real Spain Guide – Girona

The arrival of RyanAir and other low cost airlines at Girona Airport in the north eastern corner of Spain has made the region an attractive weekend destination. With a flight time of around 2 hours from the UK, it is possible to spend a weekend break in Girona. As well as being around an hour and 20 minutes north of Barcelona, Girona has plenty to offer visitors. The city has a beautiful old town area built on the banks of the Onyar River. Girona is around 15 minutes from the airport.
Girona Airport is also the main gateway to the Costa Brava, so in summer months it is generally very busy. For the rest of the year the region is quieter, although it is an all year destination with low cost flight operator Ryanair. In the winter months the airport is mainly used by visitors to Barcelona. There are coaches to Barcelona which connect with all the Ryanair flights.
Like all of the Costa Brava, Girona has a Mediterranean climate, which means even in the winter months, the daytime temperatures are generally very mild. The early spring and autumn are good months to visit and enjoy the warm sunshine. Being located around 30km inland, the temperatures are slightly cooler than on the coast in winter, and a little warmer in summer. Temperatures typically reach 13-16 degrees maximum in the winter months.
Girona itself is a small town, with a beautiful old town and cathedral. Girona old town is intersected by a river, and is well worth spending at least a day exploring. There is a market on Saturdays. The town has not been spoilt by tourism and retains much of its Spanish charm.
The museum of Salvador Dali in Figueres just to the north of Girona attracts many visitors. The museum was designed by the artist himself, and although it contains the world’s most comprehensive collection of his original paintings, it is the internal design and architecture which is possibly even more striking. In the busy summer months there may be queues, so it is worth booking tickets in advance.
